Richmond is supposed to be the city of “Pride and Purpose.” Our representatives are supposed to share the common purpose of improving the lives of all community members. So why is the City Council spending long hours on a policy resolution calling on Congress to stop shipping crude by rail, while they continued to ignore community appeals to draft a resolution demanding that Congress approve the DREAM Act?

This week, we as a community celebrated Cesar Chavez day. Chavez fought for the people that society neglected – poor, immigrant workers. Yet today, many of Richmond residents find they are still ignored by those in power. Our city boasts a vibrant Latino community worth of support regardless of their legal status.

At schools throughout our community, such as Richmond High School and Kennedy High School, groups like The Gooden College Connection work to help students prepare for college. However some of these students are undocumented and will not be able to reach their fullest potential without our support. These Richmond youth have lived in the United States for most of their lives and want nothing more than to be recognized for what they are, Americans.

The DREAM Act is a bipartisan legislation that can solve this injustice in our community. With the DREAM Act, undocumented youth would be eligible for a path to citizenship with the completion of a college degree or two years of military service. Why won’t the Richmond city council heed our calls and address this important issue?

We should have pride in ALL our Richmond youth and work together to ensure those that need it have a path to citizenship. I urge the City Council to pass a resolution and live up Richmond’s motto.
