This week in Richmond: Your guide to the city's best events

Annual Richmond Citywide Walk Night

What: With this year's theme of "Alive & Free," the annual walk promotes a message of healing and lifelines to ceasefire in Richmond.

When: Friday, August 22nd, at 5 pm

Where: Starts at North Richmond Missionary Baptist, 1427 Fred Jackson Way, Richmond

Why: With the goal of spreading peace and healing, the citywide walk will build bonds in the community while standing up to violence.

"When the Game Stands Tall" premier with the Kelly family

What: On the opening day of the movie, the Kelly family invites the local community for a premier of "When the Game Stands Tall." In addition to chronicling the De La Salle football team, the film celebrates the memory of Terrance Kelly, a start football player who was killed two days before he was to attend the University of Oregon.

When: Friday, August 22nd. Doors open at 6:45 pm and the movie begins at 7:15 pm

Where: Hilltop Theatre, 3200 Klose Way, San Pablo

Why: "When the Game Stands Tall" depicts the greatest high school winning streak in American football history, and hits home for many in the community. Tonight's showing will be a moment to reflect on the local legend and the individuals who made it happen.

Chill with a cop

What: An ice cream social with the Richmond Police Department.

When: Saturday, August 23rd, from 11 am to 1 pm

Where: Community Greenspace Park, Harbour Way and MacDonald, Richmond

Why: The ice cream social with the RPD will allow the community to get to know local officers, learn crime fighting techniques, and enjoy delicious ice cream.

Roller derby returns

What: The final double-header and championship game of the Bay Area Derby Girls, the local roller derby league.

When: Saturday, August 23rd. Doors open at 3:30 pm with the first game starting at 5

Where: The Craneway Pavilion, 1414 Harbour Way South, Richmond

Why: This is the last chance to catch the Bay Area Derby girls skate and shove their way to victory

A kayak adventure

What: A guided kayak trip to Brooks Island where adventurers will be allowed to hike a two mile trail.

When: Sunday, August 24th from 10 am to 4 pm

Where: Starting at the Richmond Marina and then off to Brooks Island

Why: Brooks Island typically isn't open to the public, and this guided trip will allow those with an adventurous spirit to hike a trail not often traveled.

Cars at the Craneway

What: WaterWerks on the Bay is a German car show where the public can roll in their prized vehicles for display and competition,

When: Sunday, August 24th from 11:00 am to 10:30 pm

Where: The Craneway Pavilion, 1414 Harbour Way South, Richmond

Why: Open all day Sunday, WaterWerks on the Bay is an event celebrating German automotive design. Enthusiasts can enter their cars in a competition for the best formed vehicle, or just peruse the vehicles.

Business breakfast with the Chamber

What: A monthly breakfast held by the Chamber of Commerce.

When: Wednesday, August 27th from 7:30 am to 8:45 am

Where: Richmond Berkeley Courtyard Marriott, 3150 Garritty Way, Richmond

Why: For local businesses and interested members of the public alike, this breakfast will include reports by Chief Magnus and Chief Michael Banks of the Richmond Police Department and will serve as a time to discuss local business news.

Music on Main Street

What: The Richmond Main Street Initiative is continuing their Music on Main Street concert series with a fresh evening of music.

When: Wednesday, August 27th from 5 pm to 7:30 pm

Where: Marina Way and MacDonald Avenue, Richmond

Why: The performances by the Richmond Jazz Collective, Andre Theirry, and Zydeco Magic are just the tip of the iceberg at Music on Main Street. There will also be a family bike rodeo, food vendors, local boutiques, and much more for both kids and adults.
