After the passage of Measure J last November, the election of the Mayor and members of the Council will require an election to be held on the same day as the primary election immediately before the General Election in November. If any candidate secures 50%+1 of the vote that day, they are automatically elected. If there are multiple candidates and no one secures the 50%+1 threshold, then the top two head for the General Election in November.
Because the election has been moved up, the campaigning also tends to move up.
There are at least four candidates running for Richmond Mayor that have announced and a couple more names being discussed in the background.
District 2—which covers the area from Point Richmond, through Parchester Village and Hilltop Mall—currently represented by Councilmember Cesar Zepeda—has no challengers announced…yet.
District 3—which covers the Southside and part of the Iron Triangle—currently represented by Councilmember Doria Robinson—hs Brandon Evans challenging.
District 4—covering from the Fairmede Hilltop area through the El Sobrante Hills all the way to Carriage Hills—and is represented by Councilmember Soheila Bana—seems to have multiple candidates. Jamin Pursell and Kaycha Gallo both want to unseat Ms. Bana and serve on the Council.
Fighting the threat of rain, about two dozen supporters gathered at Hilltop Park on the afternoon of Sunday November 16th for Jamin Pursell’s campaign launch.
Starting off the event El Cerrito Mayor Pro Tem Gabe Quinto spoke of his support followed by Richmond Councilmember Doria Robinson and then Pinole Councilmember Devon Murphy.
