The past 12 months in Richmond saw moments big and small that will have lasting impacts on the course of the city. In the final 10 days of 2015, here’s a look back at five of the biggest moments of year.

A new effort to bring rent control tenant protections to Richmond is brewing mere days after City Council unanimously repealed the city's contentious rent control and Just Cause eviction ordinance, which was the first such ordinance passed in California in roughly 30 years. 

Richmond City Council voted unanimously to repeal the city’s rent control and Just Cause Eviction ordinance on Tuesday, a decision that came swiftly and easily to a council that had previously grappled at length with the issue.

“C-R-A-Z-Y, that’s why I didn’t do it,” said Ezzie Ruth Martin with a small laugh. Martin has been a landlord in Richmond since the 1970’s, and she would go years — once even a decade — without raising rent for her tenants.
