Philadelphia Hoagie Station is a small food stand on 23rd Street. Its a classic hole in the wall serving up great food – a hidden gem among the many restaurants crowding the main street.
The location used to be a Nations way back in the day, circa the early 90s.
Now the personable family-owned business serves a mean hoagie, burgers and other similar food. Upon entering, I was greeted by one of the owner's sons, Sam. Although very professional, I felt as if I was with one of my buddies. We discussed the recent world cup game as I ordered a chocolate shake, bell pepper cheesesteak and, of course, their famous chili-cheese fries.
It had been a while since I went to the shop, but once my mouth bit into that sandwich, it remembered it was and continues to be a scrumptious experience. The chili fries are well known for a reason and they’ve recently added garlic fries as well. The shakes are great – Sam, the owner, makes them himself right in front of you. A visit to the shop makes it clear that it has a fair number of regulars. Some prefer the burgers, pastrami, or chicken teriyaki special. You really can’t go wrong. The food is well prepared and at a fair price. The only caution is the dine-in area is tiny, so if you are eating with a large group or want to make sure you get a seat, you will likely need to get the food to go.
They have a faithful following locally, and I don't need to question why. Looking at an 18-year old menu from when his parents had opened the small establishment, Sam laughed about how inexpensive the food was back in the day. Its obvious that the establishment has stood the test of time. People come for the food, but they become regulars because of the excellent service.
