With the Fourth of July approaching and Juneteenth celebrations in full swing, many Americans will order up good old-fashioned Barbeque. Richmond proudly boasts some of the best around.
Taste is all that really matters when judging authentic American BBQ. CJ’s BBQ & Fish is located on Macdonald Avenue in a small building. The restaurant sits only around eight comfortably. You even have to order soda from their vending machine as they use all refrigeration to store fresh ingredients. Small digs aside, CJ’s serves up big authentic BBQ taste.
We have been to CJ’s on several occasions. Their ribs are tender with a wonderful flavor. Their catfish nuggets are cooked to just succulent. The sauce is sweet and flavorful. The potato salad is creamy with a Southern feel. In true southern form, every item comes with white bread. They have a large menu of meat options to choose from including pork, beef brisket, and chicken. The service is always friendly with a family feel. And it all tastes great!
The signature BBQ sauce comes in mild, medium, and hot. The recipe is a closely guarded family secret but has its origins in Mississippi with a small amount of Arkansas influence. We pressed, we beg, we tried, but were not able to get them to divulge the ingredients of the delicious sauce.
When you come visit you might just catch them putting eighty-pound pig into the pit. If you are craving BBQ or Fish for Juneteenth or Fourth of July, CJ’s is a great choice.
