Derby Girls take Richmond

What: The first doubleheader of the Bay Area Derby (BAD) Girls, the four Bay Area roller derby teams.

When: Saturday, July 12th. Doors open at 4:30 pm with the first game kicking off at 6.

Where: Craneway Pavilion, 1414 Harbour Way South, Richmond

Why: Because roller derby is more underrated than soccer, and this is one of the final chances to see the second place roller derby league in the nation go head to head before the season comes to an end next month.

Gardening at school

What:  The second work day at Washington Elementary's Community Garden

When: Friday, July 11th from 9 am to 12 pm

Where: Washington Elementary School, 565 Wine Street, Richmond

Why: This is a chance to learn gardening techniques hands-on from two Contra Costa master gardeners while helping to maintain Washington Elementary's community garden.

Farmers on Main Street

What: The weekly farmers' market in downtown Richmond.

When: Wednesday, July 16th from 10 am to 2 pm

Where: Nevin Plaza between 13th and Marina Way

Why: While California is abound with fresh produce all year, the summer months offer the best fruits and vegetables--from melons to corn to strawberries. They're all available at the Main Street farmers' market and are bound to taste better than what the grocery store has to offer.

Summer music in Point Richmond

What:  Point Richmond's summer concert series, this week featuring Larry Vann and Steep Ravine

When: Friday, July 11th from 5:30 pm to 7:45 pm

Where: Washington Ave and Park Place, Point Richmond

Why: The summer concert series in Point Richmond is a great opportunity to pack a picnic, get together with friends and family, and hear free, diverse music in a beautiful park.

Richmond art on display:

What: Summer exhibitions at the Richmond Arts Center, the East Bay's largest visual arts center, which are free and open to the public.

When: Tuesday through Saturday, from 11 am to 5 pm, until August 22nd

Where: Richmond Arts Center, 2540 Barrett Avenue, Richmond

Why: From ceramics to painting to sculpture, a trip to the diverse Richmond Arts Center is a chance to see work from artists in the area without the cost of going to a museum

Family movies in the park

What: This summer's second family movie night. Despicable Me 2 will be playing this week.

When: 6:00 pm

Where: Richmond Memorial Auditorium

Why: Family Free Movies, organized by Richmond Recreation, is a chance to get the family together for a movie in the park, without paying $12 each for a ticket.
