Every week Radio Free Richmond provides an offering of events in the city. Here's what's happening from August 1st through the 7th.
Carnival of Stars
What: A two day long celebration of all things belly dancing, comic book, horror and sci-fi related. There will be special vendors offering veils, jewelry, and other specialities.
When: 10 am to 10 pm, Saturday, August 2nd and Sunday, August 3rd
Where: 403 Civic Center Plaza, Richmond
Why: Never before has such a hybrid of sci-fi, belly dancing, horror, and comics presented itself to the public -- this is a special opportunity.
Health fair in the park
What: Richmond Faith Initiative Collaborative Community Health Fair.
When: Saturday, August 2nd from 11 am to 4 pm
Where: Nicholl Park, Richmond
Why: Because this is an event to get free health screenings, do Zumba line dancing, and enjoy family-oriented entertainment
Farming village on Main Street
What: The Main Street Initiative, a local revitalization organization, brings the farm to downtown Richmond in an effort to promote health and good eating.
When: Friday, August 1st from 12 pm to 2 pm
Where: Harbour Way and Macdonald Avenue, Richmond
Why: This is a chance to sample and even take home farm-fresh produce while learning about healthy eating. Plus, there will be pony rides.
Puppets of the shadows
What: A shadow puppet theatre where attendees can learn about techniques of the craft while enjoying folk tales from around the world
When: Tuesday, August 5th from 3 pm to 4 pm
Where: Richmond Public Library Main Branch, 325 Civic Center Plaza Richmond
Why: Shadow puppet shows are few and far between, and learning how to do the craft from professionals is even more rare. This event will offer both.
Music at The Baltic
What: Reed Fromer Band performs at The Baltic
When: Friday, August 1st at 9:30 pm
Where: The Baltic, 135 Park Place, Point Richmond
Why: Reed Fromer Band is back for their standing set, every first Friday of the month. Come out for some R'n'B and Funk.
Painting on the hill
What: A lesson in painting with artist Rachel Gold. This week, the theme is the Bay Bridge at sunset.
When: Monday, August 4th at 7 pm
Where: 3101 Garrett Way, Richmond
Why: Everyone could go for a free painting lesson every once in a while. And this lesson also happens to take place next to a Chevy's, so there will be Mexican food aplenty.
