City Council fails to appoint candidate to vacant seat

A divided City Council last night failed to appoint a candidate to fill the vacant City Council seat. After hearing presentations from all but one of the 18 candidates, the council began a series of hurried motions to appoint a candidate to the seat. Richmond Standard: Richmond police Chief Magnus ‘celebrity star struck’ by Katie Couric’s visit

A statement from Richmond police Chief Chris Magnus: We’ve had some interesting media attention recently–and I guess it’s mostly by coincidence that it’s all seemed to come at about the same time. There’s been a lot of interest in use of force issues by locally and nationally. Several journalists (including one from Al Jazera) participated in some of the same scenarios this past Friday we use with our own officers. Lt. Louie Tirona (our lead Firearms Instructor) demonstrated how we combine our firearms training with training on decision-making. He gave the participants a first-hand view of how challenging it is to make split-second decisions that are appropriate for the situation being encountered. Continue reading

Local Restaurants: Marina Bay Grill

American food — good American food — can be hard to come by. The restaurants are often too greasy, or too soggy. Marina Bay Grill, however, is a shining, burgery beacon in a world overflowing with subpar options. The Grill has a wide menu offering everything from Philly Cheese Steak sandwiches, to mozzarella sticks, to eggs and potatoes. This variety — and the fact that Richmond is somewhat lacking in quality American places —  establishes it as a staple in the city. Continue reading
