Richmond Police Department: An Update on Recent Shootings
There has been a pronounced increase in gun violence in the past two weeks within Richmond and surrounding areas. Several of shootings and one homicide occurred within city limits, some of them involving young people. The uptick in violence has been a ‘call to action’ for law enforcement officers and members of our community.

SF Gate: What are the Bay Area’s 10 safest — and most dangerous — communities?
The FBI released its annual “Crime in the United States” report this week, and it showed that violent crime (murders, rapes, assaults and robberies) fell more than 4 percent nationally from 2012 to 2013, continuing a decades-long decline. In the Bay Area’s biggest 15 cities (those with populations above 100,000), homicides plunged 23 percent year-to-year. But the gains were mixed, with San Francisco seeing a 22 percent increase in violent crime.

Bea Roberson: Richmond, A Community Divided
2014 marked the 50th year of my life in Richmond. I moved to this city in 1964, and since then I’ve seen some things change, but many have stayed the same. New people moved here, but the city’s community has remained just as divided, and so have the city’s community organizations. New organizations have popped up, but are just as isolated and unwelcoming as the older organizations. Often, these divisions have come at the expense of those who need the most help.

David A. Brown: Richmond Rotary’s 3rd Annual “Buy A Kid A Bike” to benefit the Richmond/El Cerrito Fire & Police Holiday Program
Last year, the Richmond Rotary Club raised over $13,000 to buy bikes and helmets for kids in Richmond via the Richmond Firefighters Bikes For Kids Program, in cooperation with the Coronado YMCA and others. For each donation up to $4,700, the Club matched the donation.

SS Red Oak Victory veteran remembers life on the Naval vessel
“That was my boat, or so I liked to call it,” explained Robert Di Chiara. An original crew member on the SS Red Oak Victory, the veteran looked longingly at the boat throughout his speech at Riggers Loft yesterday. Di Chiara was the guest speaker at the Veteran’s Day celebration at SS Red Oak Victory and Riggers Loft. During his time on stage, Di Chiara recounted stories from his time on the Red Oak Victory before the crowded room, stirring laughter and tears from the audience and from himself.
